Project MARC Travel Instructions
~ How to Get There ~
Each volunteer is responsible for booking his/her own international travel into and out of Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila (Efate Island) Vanuatu.
Many US volunteers have reported good experiences with the following travel agencies:
(1)TravelAm ryan@travelam.net (contact person = Ryan Dandy); and
(2) Sterling Travel sterlingtravel@comcast.net (contact person = Velters Berkley).
An internationally oriented travel agency offering special rates for students and teachers (most volunteers qualify as teachers) is STA Travel (visit their website or call 1-800-777-0112). Student travel agencies can be found in quite a few other countries as well. Also, keep in mind that some airlines may offer attractive rates for "around the world" tickets.
Best published return fares between major US cities and Port Vila are currently (2006) in the US $ 1,400-1,600 range. Comparable rates appear to be available from Europe.

Bauerfield International Airport has an ATM where local currency (1,000 vatu equals roughly US $ 9) can be obtained. Most of the time the ATM is working.
From Bauerfield airport one can either take a taxi @ 1,200-1,500 vatu or a bus @ 200 vatu. Buses have a red B on the license plate; taxis are marked with a red "T" or "TAXI". Be sure to establish the rate for the taxi before getting in!
Most ni-Vans working in the service industry take pride in the fact that tipping is not (yet?) a custom in Vanuatu.

July teams on the 3-master "S/V Alvei";
August teams on the 74ft ketch " S/V Ranui";
and September teams on the 65ft catamaran "S/V Augustina".
