What are we doing & why

Past, Present & Future

Project MARC (Medical Assistance to Remote Communities) operates under the auspices of Globus Relief and provides medical, educational and technical support to outer island communities in the Vanuatu archipelago. Many outer island communities have had little or no outside support since the former Anglo-French "Condominium of The New Hebrides" became independent in 1980 and much of the aging, colonial power generation, transportation and telecom infrastructure collapsed.

Since our exploratory Vanuatu voyage in 2000 Project MARC volunteer teams have operated in several target areas, selected in close collaboration with the Vanuatu Ministry of Health. Our intrepid medical, educational and technical teams, supported by a flotilla of volunteer sailing vessels, can only reach these remote areas during the May thru October "dry season", when the incidence of tropical cyclones, rain storms, flooded rivers, impassable trails and malaria infections is at its lowest.

From 2001 thru 2003, under a 3-year MOU with the Vanuatu Ministry of Health, our volunteers have focussed on infrastructure rebuilding in N Ambrym, SE Malekula and the Maskelyne island group by training new village health workers as well as by constructing small local clinics. In addition, our teams provided urgent medical and dental care, including blindness prevention. Since 2004, under a 5-year MOU extension we have extended our assistance to additional hard-to-reach areas, e.g. along the West coast of Espiritu Santo island.
