Imagine a South Pacific archipelago so remote that most people never heard of it, coastal communities so hard to reach that few vessels ever stop there, and mountain villages so isolated that they don't show up on any maps! We are describing Vanuatu (the former New Hebrides).
Now imagine being asked to help provide sustainable medical care to these "forgotten" communities.......
How would YOU go about it ??
After years of learning how to reach these island communities by sailing vessel, how to build small clinics, and how to train village health workers, Project MARC volunteer teams are achieving remarkable progress.
Fire Mountain Clinic -- built on the slopes of Ambrym's active volcano to replace our makeshift tent clinics -- is now being operated by local health workers, under direct responsibility of the Vanuatu government.
Coral Bay Clinic (Maskelynes) is becoming a training center for VHWs willing to provide mobile aid post services to hard-to-reach islands and villages along the South Malekula coast, using locally built and operated sailing catamarans.
Jungle Mountain Clinic, high in the mountains along the rugged W Santo coast, so medical volunteers can treat sick patients and train local village health workers there. Since October 2005 these student VHWs -- now certified -- have been running their own aid post!We will soon be planning our 2010 season of operations after further consultation with the Vanuatu Ministry of Health. As it has for the past several years, Project MARC hopes to work with the tall ship Alvei on several expeditions. For more information about the tall ship Alvei, please visit: www.alvei.com
We are now accepting volunteers and donations for next year's projects, and are looking forward to working with all of you on these challenging tasks.
